What the court heard
He was found guilty of murder in Jarrow, South Tyneside, on 12 May 2019. He was at his 54-year-old friends flat when he attacked him as he lay on the sofa. His victim died at the scene. The judge said: "The initial fatal attack was sustained and was particularly brutal and savage, involving multiple blows, principally directed to his head and chest... There was further mutilation and desecration of the body... your abnormality of mental functioning does not provide any explanation for your behaviour on the night in question. You did not present as being acutely unwell at that time... It is clear from the level of violence you deployed that your intention was to kill"
