What the court heard
His original sentence of life with a minimum term of 25-years-imprisonment was reduced by 4-years. The Court of Appeal ruled it excessive after they disagreed with the sentencing judges (Judge Thackray) ruling that there was strong evidence that it was a murder done for gain which had increased the starting point for sentencing (to 30 years). The court said that the aggravating factors significantly outweighed the mitigating factors, and should have resulted in an increase from the starting point of 15 years to an ultimate minimum term of 21 years. He was found guilty of murder in Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, on 19 January 2021.
